Thanks for this, I love Edward Hopper’s art, I enjoyed learning more about him; I did not know he had such a big influence on film and the house painting is one of my favorites.
There's something about those ghostly streets and the play of light in his paintings isn't there. As you say, eerie and lonely. One thing that doesn't get mentioned about Hopper so much is his pretty abusive treatment of his wife. An unfortunate dark side that makes the paintings even more lonely somehow.
That's a great point! So many legendary artists, businessmen, etc., were flawed people. It's hard sometimes to reconcile the different parts of their lives.
I have always been an 'alternate enthusiast' of art. When I can, I always dedicate time to reading, studying and discussing artists and works that offend me. I didn't know about this newsletter and it really caught my attention (obviously, I signed up). I am also convinced of the beauty of how newsletters apparently very far from the topic I write about (psychological and social aspects of AI) will also give me many ideas for writing. Thanks for sharing!
One of my favorite artists. His paintings are haunting, with so much left unsaid. They are isolated moments in time that tell a story of loneliness and alienation.
“As a natural law your brain needs something to do. The men are shoveling coal but haven’t the faintest plan nor clue. If you don’t provide beauty than ugly will do.“
“Great art is the outward expression of an inner life in the artist, and this inner life will result in his personal vision of the world. ” - Edward Hopper
This quote captures my thoughts on my photography style perfectly.
I've known about Hopper through his Nighthawks painting but never read up further on him. Then I found a video on YouTube about his other works. I think this post is definitely a sign - I should read up on him and look for more of his work.
Hopper was greatly inspired by the Dutch painter Vermeer, and he translated Vermeer's feelings of solitude and quiet into his urban surroundings. Additionally, he had a significant influence on the German film director Wim Wenders
I love Hopper! He’s one of the greatest, most unique artists to ever exist. I also find many of his paintings are great companions to my pieces, so I tend to use them as thumbnails.

I didn't know that either. I learned a lot while doing research for this article.
