Welcome to Artobiography – your go-to source for the stories and insights behind the world's most captivating art.
I’m starting with Vincent van Gogh's Shoes, a painting I liked so much that I sketched it in my college art class back in 2000.
The Artist: Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh is one of the most famous artists of all time, known for his brilliant yet tragic life. He was born on March 30, 1853, in Zundert, Netherlands.
Exhibiting intelligence and sensitivity from a young age, Van Gogh immersed himself in the cultural ideas of his time, exploring literature, philosophy, and art. These influences shaped his unique perspective and inspired his paintings.
Despite his eventual fame, Van Gogh's early career was filled with uncertainty and hardship. He tried many jobs before finding his true passion in art. He worked as an art dealer, a teacher, a bookstore clerk, a preacher, and a social worker among poor miners.
At 26 years old, he decided to focus on art. Self-taught, Van Gogh broke away from traditional art norms, leading to a unique style that later changed how people viewed art.
Van Gogh's artistic life was brief yet filled with intense creativity. He produced approximately 2,000 artworks, including around 900 oil paintings and more than 1,100 watercolors, drawings, and sketches. His style evolved rapidly, marked by bold colors, dynamic brushwork, and emotional depth.

Van Gogh was influenced by the French artists, especially Jean-François Millet. He also deeply admired Japanese prints, which he collected and displayed wherever he lived. Still, his approach was entirely his own, filled with innovation and a distinctive use of color and form.
Throughout his life, Van Gogh struggled with mental health issues that led to periods of intense isolation and despair. Despite his struggles, he continued to paint, finding comfort and expression in his art. He often lived in poverty, relying on his brother Theo for financial and emotional support, frequently moving from place to place. During his lifetime, Van Gogh sold only one painting, Red Vineyard at Arles.
Sadly, Van Gogh's life ended at just 37 years old. After he died, his sister-in-law Johanna worked hard to promote his art, making sure people recognized his talent as an important artist.
The Art: Shoes
One of Van Gogh's well-known paintings is called Shoes. Completed in 1888, it shows a pair of well-worn shoes. However, the painting is far more than a still life. It tells a story of life's journey. Van Gogh used thick brushstrokes and a dark color palette to make the shoes look real and full of texture.
In this painting, Van Gogh illustrated that even ordinary objects like shoes have stories. The way he painted the shoes makes them look like they've been through a lot, almost as if they're tired from a long journey. He didn't just want to show what the shoes looked like. He wanted to show what they felt like.
Shoes stands out for its strong lines and intense brushwork, unlike the softer style of Impressionism of his time. The shoes look rugged and worn out, and they seem to have personalities of their own. Some people think the shoes could represent the hard work and struggles of everyday life.
Van Gogh often chose everyday items to paint and put a lot of emotion into them. This painting is a great example of how Van Gogh could take something simple and make it mean something deeper.
